Description

James Gang: An Important Legal Document Related to the May 1867 Robber of the Richmond, Missouri Bank. In this description George Wasson names James M. Devers as one of the perpetrators and specifically charges him with the killing of the Griffins and town mayor John B. Shaw. Devers was eventually tracked down in Kentucky and extradited to the jail at Richmond. Also held there was another former Quantrill man, Andy McGuire. Both were charged with the robbery, but were never tried. A rumor circulated that the men were going to be sprung from jail, and a vigilante mob seized and lynched them before that could happen. Another suspected robber, Bud Pence, was also found hiding out in Kentucky. His extradition to Richmond was requested, but there was widespread concern about a repeat of the lynching and the sheriff holding Pence appears to have let him go. An editorial in The Louisville Courier urged the state's governor not to honor an extradition request should Pence be caught again, on the grounds that he would not get a fair trial in Missouri.

This fascinating deposition is 7.75" x 12", and in excellent condition. Also included with the lot is an early postcard by Montgomery Photo Service, Kansas City, showing post mortem photo of Jesse James (damage at two corners and corner tack holes).
