The Tombstone and Arizona Territory Collection

Graham County: Indictment and Arrest Warrant for Cattle Rustling. Two documents from Graham County, Arizona Territory relating to the crime of cattle rustling. 1) Indictment, Territory of Arizona vs. Del Lewis for grand larceny, 12 June 1891. This 8 3/8" x 14" printed legal document of the District Court of the Second Judicial District of the Territory of Arizona, is filled out in ink and details the crime of Lewis and is signed by the attorney general. The back of the indictment form has the signature of two witnesses and within the second and third folds from the bottom is information filled in in ink which lists the indictment number, "283," and the date which it was filed, June 13, 1891. 2) Bench warrant for the arrest of Del Lewis for the crime listed in the indictment, signed June 15, 1891. The printed legal document, 8" x 10.5," is filled out in ink by a County clerk and is stamped by Second Judicial District Court, Graham County, Arizona Territory. The back of the document has a statement in ink by Sheriff George A. Olney, certifying that he had "served the within warrant by arresting the within named defendant and bringing him into Court on this 10th day of Dec." The document is printed between the first and second folds from the top, but is only partially filled out, with no date of when in was filed. Del Lewis mentioned in these two documents may have been the same person who later became sheriff of Cochise County from 1901 to 1904. Sheriff George A. Olney was formerly A.G. Hill, brother of Texas cowboy and cattleman, Joe Hill, before he changed his name. Both documents have horizontal folds and the bench warrant has a small piece missing from the left hand edge of the document at the bottom fold and parts of the folds are weak but still intact. Otherwise both documents are in good condition. Fascinating documents regarding a prevalent and serious crime in the Western United States.
