Description

Georgia: Ft. Mitchell Creek Nation Plat Map Drawn in 1827. 12.5" x 12.5" ink and watercolor map, titled "A Plan of the Late Aquired [sic] Territory. April 8th, 1827." Signed by C. D. Parkes. The map shows the counties of Carroll, Cowetah, Troup and Muscogee in Georgia, each county divided up in square plots. The domain of the "Cherokees" is noted at the top edge of Carroll County. Ft. Mitchell in neighboring Alabama is marked off and the area captioned "Chattahochee River Creek Indian Cession". By the Treaty of Indian Agency signed November 15, 1827, the Muscogee or Creek Indians ceded all their land in Georgia, relocating to Oklahoma. The Cherokee Nation adopted a Constitution modeled on the U. S. Constitution in 1827, aspiring to self-rule, but were forcibly removed from their lands after the discovery of gold in 1828.

Condition: Archivally mounted to card stock.
