Description

Famous Long Branch Saloon Good-For Token. For those of us old enough to remember the long-running television series Gunsmoke, the Long Branch Saloon in Dodge City is a familiar name. In fact, the establishment did exist. We offer a 1" (24 mm.) brass token which is one of only three specimens known. One side is inscribed "Good For 1 Drink At The Long Branch B. & H." [bar and hotel]. The other side has a steer with the stamped initials C.O.D. These initials constitute a cattle brand used at the C.O.D. Ranch located fifty miles south of Dodge City, Kansas, on Sand Creek. The "C.O.D." was owned by Chalkey Beeson and William H. Harris, partners in the Long Branch from 1878 to 1883. Beeson sold out his interest in 1883 to Luke Short who had garnered a dubious reputation by gunning down Charlie Storms in front of the Oriental Saloon in Tombstone. Wyatt, Virgil and James Earp operated the gaming tables at the Oriental and were friends with Harris. Short was "exiled" from Dodge City by local politicians, but enlisted the aid of Wyatt Earp, Bat Masterson and others who returned to their former home in Dodge City and managed to "negotiate" a retreat by Short's enemies and restore his interest in the Long Branch Saloon. The token grades VF/F and is, we believe, the finest of the three specimens known.

We have received an advisory from a knowledgeable collector of Western merchant's tokens to the effect that there may be closer to seven - nine examples known. Given that information, it is impossible to accurately place this example in the hierarchy of condition among known specimens. What is safe to say is that it is a pleasing example of a very rare token with particular appeal to Western collectors because of its associations.
