Description
Emigration and Land Location in Texas. Comprised of thirty-two letters, one of which is written on the verso of a rail pass, and one business card spanning the years 1877 through 1879. The majority of the correspondence contained is between Joseph Hays, a land locator based in Fort Worth, and Henry H. Hannan of Swan Creek, Ohio, who is hoping to file for 100 sections of land in West Texas.Hannan is planning a second trip to Texas, with the help of Hays, to head "out west" with a group of potential investors for an "...extended trip of observation..." to Lynn and Garza Counties (located in West Texas, just south of the Panhandle) in the fall of 1878. Hays insists on Hannan's urgency in coming to Texas, especially with the presence of other parties ("There are a great many Ohio people investing in these cheap lands") who are "...getting in a head of us & take all of our land. There is a party to start from here on a locating trip And of course will go into our territory." He advises Hannan to obtain certain provisions for his party, such as "...a pair of Blankets each. And by all means a pony bridle & saddle - to enjoy the trip." Hays explains that he will "...furnish all [other] provisions, cooking & transportation..." but will have to "...charge all (except those investing largely) about $15.00 for the trip from here and back."
In September 1878, Hays writes regarding the outbreak of yellow fever and states that "The Yellow Fever has caused one party to postpone the time..." and that he probably won't be going out until later in the month or "...the middle of Oct as the Yellow Fever will prevent many from coming...& that will give time for the fever to disappear."
Hannan does indeed make it down in November 1878 and there are several letters to his wife which he has written from Texas. There is some slight separation of the folds in some of the letters which also show some light toning and foxing. All letters come with the original transmittal envelopes.
