Description
Early Slave Sale Document, ca. mid-1500s. Two pages, front and verso, 8.5" x 12.5", December 6, 1553, [Peru], in Peninsular Spanish, mostly un-translated. An approximate translation reads, "Lawyer Diego Rodriguez, original resident of Arequipa, sells to Garcia Lopez, a Negro named Gaspar, free of liens and he is not a drunk, thief or runner and is sold for the price of 250 pesos of silver which has been paid. . . ." Ragged borders and light toning, else fine.More Information:
Diego Rodriguez, the master of the Spanish vessel San Sebastian, is known to have smuggled 400 African slaves from the Cape Verde Islands to America during one 1574 transatlantic voyage--he had licenses for only 145 slaves on that trip. During the early transatlantic slave trade, Rodriguez and others would "hire" Africans as "cabin boys" to make the voyage. Once in America, the "cabin boys" would be sold as slaves. The slave mentioned in this document, "Gaspar", could have been one of those "cabin boys".
