Description
Archive of Documents Regarding Charges Made By Santee Sioux Indians, 1868. The archive consists of fifteen holographic and docketed pages, office copies of letters, 8" x 12.5", Santee Agency, Nebraska, July-December 1868. Most are either addressed to or from Major J. M. Stone, Indian Agent. SomeThe documents deal with charges leveled by three prominent Santees: Wabasha, the leader of the Red Wing band; Wakute; and, Big Eagle (Wamditanka), a Mdewakanton warrior. The men charged that the Santees were cheated in their allotment of horses and cattle promised under the provisions of the 1867 Indian Peace Commission, concluded in order "to establish peace with certain hostile Indian tribes." The Indians claimed that over half the cattle delivered the year before died at the hands of White contractors. The charges were rebutted by Knox County, Nebraska residents, William Bigham, farmer, and Anthony Genick, blacksmith. Bigham, one of the contractors, wrote that, "It is natural for the Indians to make complaints, talk of wrong treatment, (he would not be "Lo the poor Indian" if he did not) thereby creating sympathy." Bigham continued, "I think your Chiefs succeeded admirably, judging by the provisions and goods given them by the Peace Commission last summer." Genick, also a contractor, agreed with Bigham's letter. You be the judge.
