Description

Animated Cap Gun: "The Chinese Must Go!" Although Chinese emigrants played a major contribution in the building of the transcontinental railroad and the extraction of precious minerals in mines of the West, they were never welcomed by non-Asian denizens of the region. Anti-Chinese animas reached its peak in the 1880's with the passage of the Chinese Exclusion Act. This 5" x 5" cast iron mechanical cap pistol was made during that period. It is marked "Pat. Sep. 2. 79." on the barrel and "The Chinese Must Go" on the handle. When the trigger is pulled, a Caucasian American kicks the derriere of a Chinese American (a.k.a., coolie). A cap placed in the unfortunate gentleman's mouth will explode when the foot hits its mark. There is a welded repair on one leg of the Caucasian. We have not tried to operate it, but all parts seem complete and functional. There is some light rust. Much of the original lacquer finish remains, especially on the clothing of the figurines.
