Description

African Americana: Pair of Slavery Documents. Interesting 8" x 7" document, written on both sides, titled: "Sail [sic] of the hires of the Negros that belongs to the Estate of A. M. Grays Deac. from the 1st of January 1865 1st January 1866". It accounts for the disposition of slaves in the waning period of the Civil War and beyond. The front of the document lists the names of nine slaves and the wages they generated. "Four Black Men deserted and went to the Yankees in the year 1864." On the back side, a statement by the executor reads: "These negroes were all emancipated in Apr in this year so that only one fourth of the hire recoverable." Sold together with an earlier document, circa 1848-1849, measuring 8" x 10". likewise written on both sides. It is apparently an inventory & evaluation of an estate and lists over 20 slaves by name and value. Signed by the four appraisers of the estate of Thomas Coker. Some ink stains and smudges, as shown.
