Description
Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant: Eyewitness Account of Their First Meeting. Handwritten account on two sheets of paper measuring 6 ½" x 9" each, signed "Chas. N. Richards/ Keeper of Stationery U. S. Senate". Likely written as a reminiscence many years after the fact, as the author describes himself as the "only living witness". Lincoln recognized the General, quickly approached him and started off the conversation by saying he believed this was the first time they had met. After talking briefly to the President and Secretary of State Seward, Grant was forced by the throng of people to move into the East Room. "Being only 5 feet 8 inches in height, he was compelled to stand up on a sofa & shake hands with all who could get near enough."Auction Info
