Battle of Trent's Reach
1865 Civil War Soldier's Diary.4" x 6" leatherbound diary for the year 1865. It is believed to have been written by James H. Morris who served in the 10th Regiment , New York Heavy Artillery (His name is written in the memoranda section of the diary). The entries are nearly-entirely in pencil, in a small hand. The entries that cover the period of the Civil War run from January 19, 1865 to April 3, 1865. It then skips to October 1st, when he discusses the trip home to Ohio. The subject of main interest to Civil War buffs is the last major naval engagement of the Civil War, the Battle of Trent's Reach where the ironclad CSS Richmond was severely damaged. Some excerpts: [January 22nd] "... At about 8 PM a force of 200 Reb's under a Maj. attacked the line but were driven back. A deserter reports the enemy desirous of getting the right of our line for purpose of getting wood...": [January 23rd] "Enemy again attacked our picket line which being reinforced by 175 men gave them a heavy fire. We had one poor fellow shot through the head. Batty Carpenter threw a few shells into their line, one ricocheting beautifully... The attack was to cover the descent of their gunboats which floated silently by Batty Brady to our obstructions as frantically we moved them..."; [January 24th] "The facts reported to Gen. Ferraro who refused to believe it he having received a telegram that none had helped Battery Brady. Daylight showed three iron clads but so close that our gunmen could not be deployed sufficiently to bear on them, but on their giving some distance further up the river & getting aground when the tide went out, one came within range. The Richmond was blown up by our 100 pounder at Batty Parsons...": [January 25th] "..Reb batteries on flats still firing into crows nest and Batty Parsons. Some of the shells strike near our camp. The steam launch of the Richmond has floated down. Contains torpedoes... some splendidly finished 9 shooter revolvers with chambers for buck shot...": [January 27th] "...Reb papers say they blew up the Richmond themselves. That won't go down with us." The last pages of the diary contains accounts of purchases of supplies from various army units, indicating Morris might have worked in the Quartermaster Department, or as an aide-de-camp. Most of the entries are legible under magnification, although a few words are smudged or otherwise problematic. The entries are a combination of brief remarks and detailed reports, with long stretches in-between.
