[William T. Sherman] General Sherman Visits Tombstone. Four documents relating to General William Tecumseh Sherman's visit to Tombstone on April 7-8, 1882. 1) A 7.625" x 6.125" sheet of lined paper, torn from larger sheet, with writing in ink, some underlined in red. Dated April 8, 1882, this document is a payment voucher from the "Committee on Hall" for "Gen. Sherman's Reception" to pay J.T. Bowman $3.00 for "Making 1 Step Ladder" $4.00 for "Cleaning Hall." The back of the documents is stamped in red "Warrant No. 170 Approved. Paid." 2) Part of a pay manuscript voucher, 4" x 3.5" portion of a larger sheet that is glued to a 3.25" x 6.75" sheet of paper, similar to the one above, from the committee of decorations for General Sherman's visit, dated April 8, 1882, approving the payment of $30 or $3,000 to J. T. Bowman. On the larger sheet is writing in ink in which three members of the "Committee on Decorations" certify that "the above account in correct" with their signatures. Written in ink on the back of the smaller sheet is "Refered [sic] to the Com. on Finance." 3) A 5" x 4" sheet of paper torn from a larger sheet, dated April 3, 1882, on which is written in ink approval of the City Council to pay Will A. Nash $5.00 for "100 Invitations" and $2.50 for "25 Extra." On the back of the document is approval of payment stamped in red. 4) A 4.75" x 8.5" lined sheet, dated April 8, 1882, on which the Committee on Salute agrees to pay Charles H. Mauk $5.00 for providing an express wagon. The back of the document has approval for payment stamped in red.Included with the four documents is a printout of a 2006 article on Sherman's visit to Tombstone. When Sherman visited Tombstone he was the commanding general of the U.S. armies. He received a rousing welcome in the town, including gunfire salutes, firecrackers, and parades which were organized by Tombstone's leading citizens. Sherman arrived in Tombstone six months after the gunfight near the O.K. Corral. He was touring southeast Arizona at the behest of President Chester A. Arthur, who was concerned about the rise of lawlessness and its impact on border security which threatened diplomatic relations with Mexico. These documents present an interesting insight into Tombstone's arrangements relating to the famous general's visit. The documents are in good condition.
