Description

[Samuel Clemens]: 1866 Steamship "America" Blank Ticket. 12 3/4" x 4 1/8" printed C. A. Transit Company blank ticket to board the steamship from San Francisco to New York via Nicaragua. It was on this voyage that Clemens met Captain 'Ned Wakeman, the muse for Captain Stormfield, and whom Clemens recalled fondly in his autobiography. This ticket is the earliest obtainable Twain-related California imprint. BAL lists only two imprints for Twain earlier than this ticket (1865 and 1866) both published in New York. Twain's ticket for the trip apparently did not survive, but this unused ticket from the ticket agent's original ledger book from the America's last voyage of the year is an extraordinary survival.

Condition: Some toning and minor wear to the edges, and two small slits at left margin where ticket was attached to a booklet.
