[Perote Prisoners]. Republic of Texas Treasury Warrant Issued to James L. Trueheart. 7.75" x 3.75", Austin, January 15, 1846. Issued to James L. Trueheart in the amount of $25.00 for "Expenses from Mexico to Texas." Cancelled and endorsed on verso.

More Information: Trueheart served as a Texas Ranger under Jack Hays in 1841. Hays' small unit, which included only thirteen Rangers, was tasked with identifying a possible Mexican invasion of the Republic of Texas. Later, while serving as a clerk of the district court in San Antonio, Trueheart was captured along with the entire court, by Adrian Woll's troops in September 1842. He was held prisoner for two years. His prison diary was later edited by Frederick C. Chabot and published in 1934 under the title The Perote Prisoners.
