[Martin Luther King, Jr.]. The Montgomery Improvement Association Desk Calendar for the Year 1957. Encased within a cardboard sleeve, the pages contain short notes scattered throughout with reminders regarding appointments, speaking engagements, and meetings with members of congress, civil rights leaders, religious leaders, et al. The entries are in the hand of Maude L. Ballou, friend and personal secretary to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., while he was in Montgomery. Entries of note include:February 13 - "Rev. H. A. L. Clements & Rev. King dictated letter to Mr. Coats in Atlanta requesting permission to establish Credit Union for MIA./Rev. King & Abernathy left on 10:40 train for Southern Negro Leaders Conference in New Orleans the 14th & 15th."
February 15 - "Atty. Gray's office called this afternoon about 4:55 reporting an incident on Court St. Bus today. a white man slapped a Negro woman just because she was sitting across from him."
February 19 - "Call Mr. Lee, ask him to get his committee together on station wagons."
April 9 - "4:00 Dr. Reddick at Rev. King's house." Lawrence Reddick was an historian and King's
biographer.
May 8 - "Have made arrangements for person to go to [?] half price round trip . . . M.I.A. will pay the rest. When can you pay the rest? Come to mass meeting at Lily Baptist Church."
May 15 - "Registration for Dexter to station wagon."
June 12 - "Martin leaving for Washington D.C. to confer with Vice-Pres. Nixon tomorrow. Meeting to be held in Room 361, Senate Office Building."
June 13 - Meeting with Richard Nixon: "2:00 P.M. meet with Vice Pres. Richard Nixon in Room 361, Senate Office Building. Ralph D. Abernathy to sit in on conference upon Martin's request. MLB [Maude L. Ballou]"
June 26 - "Call Executive Committee...Notify Rev. King" Also, "R. W. Rutherford Put one of Rev. King's
speeches on the John Milton Talking Book Magazine, which is sent to blind people all over the world"
July 1 - "Mrs. Lottie Varner...Driving for MIA carpool"
August 2 - "Call Mr. Lee MIA business"
August 30 - "Nixon [E. D. Nixon]/Billy Graham"
November 6 - "Pick up ticket to and from New York $109.45 Rev. King"
November 7 - "What happened in Memphis? Reddick"
November 12 - "Robt McCain se Mrs. King regarding log for Rev. King's car and log for Volkswagen"
