Description

[Fort Sumter]. J. Moody Smith Autograph Letter Signed. Two pages with integral blank, 7.75" x 10", Washington, April 12, 1861. Written to John Carey, a U.S. Representative from Ohio, on the very day the war started, in part: "We are all anxiously waiting to hear the result of the expedition to feed the Government employees in Fort Sumpter [sic] . . . What is to be our fate, in the future, God only knows. All seems to my mind, dark and gloomy . . . I, for one, will hope for the restoration of that peace and prosperity which has heretofore characterized our Country." Folds.
