Colonial Currency
[Colonial America] and [Revolutionary War]. American Colonial Bank Notes from Each of the Thirteen Colonies including: Massachusetts-Bay Four Dollar Note. 3.5" x 2.75" (sight), guaranteeing the possessor be "paid FOUR Spanish milled DOLLARS" by December 31, 1786. Circular cancellation mark at the center obscures some of the text. Smoothed folds with chipping at the edges; toned. [and:] South Carolina Twenty Five Pound Note. 4.75" x 3.25" (sight), "THIS BILL entitles the Bearer TWENTYFIVE POUNDS Currency by a resolution of Congress March 6, 1776." Lightly stained at right; separation of one fold. [and:] Georgia Three Pence Note. 3.25" x 2.25" (sight), 1776, acknowledging "the Sum of THREE PENCE Sterling, is due from the Province to the Bearer." [and:] Rhode Island Five Shilling Note. 2.25" x 3.75", 1786, worth "FIVE SHILLINGS in Lawful Silver." [and:] Delaware Five Shilling Note. 2.75" x 3.5", 1776, paying "Five Shillings according to an Act of the General Assembly...passed in the 15th year of the reign of His Majesty, Geo." Moderate to heavy toning. [and:] New York Ten Pound Note. 3.75" x 2", April 2, 1759, "this bill shall pass current for TEN POUNDS." Below an engraved coat of arms is the following: "'Tis Death to counterfeit this Bill." Even toning. [and:] New Hampshire Three Dollar Note. 3.75" x 2.75", April, 1780, to pay "The Possessor of this Bill...THREE Spanish...Dollars." Circular cancellation mark at center obscures some of the text. [and:] New Jersey One Shilling and Six Pence Note. 3.75" x 2", "by a Law of the Colony of New-Jersey, passed in the Fourteenth Year of the Reign of his Majesty King George the Third." Moderate toning. [and:] North Carolina Three Pound Note. 3.5" x 2.75", "to be paid out of the Public Treasury, On Demand, at any Time after the Tenth Day of June, 1772." Toned edges. [and:] Virginia Seven Hundred and Fifty Dollar Note. 3.75" x 3", to be "exchanged and redeemed in Spanish Milled Dollars, or the Value thereof in Gold or Silver...on or before the 30th Day of December, 1792." Chipped edges; vertical fold separating at the edges with minor loss of paper. [and:] Maryland Half-Dollar Note. 3.5" x 2.75", 1775, entitles the bearer "to receive gold or Silver, at the Rate of Four Shillings and Six-pence Sterling, per Dollar." Toned with chipped edges. [and:] Pennsylvania Fifty Shilling Note. 2.75" x 3.5", 1773. Toned edges. [and:] Connecticut Ten Shilling Note. 2.75" x 3.5, July 1, 1780, to be paid "by the Treasurer of the State of CONNECTICUT Ten Shillings...Spanish milled Dollars." Circular cancellation mark at the center obscures some of the text. Lightly toned edges.Attractively matted in red and framed with a print of John Trumbull's painting "Declaration of Independence" and a brass plate engraved with a short history of colonial American currency to an overall size of 34.75" x 41.25".
