Description
[1864 Presidential Election]. Soldier's Power of Attorney and Affidavit. On April 21, 1864, the state legislature of New York passed an act allowing soldiers fighting in the war to cast their vote for president. In the affidavit, measuring 9.5" x 4", John D. Hunt, a member of Co. "D," 21st New York Cavalry, then at Weston, West Virginia, swears on October 15, 1864, that he is a citizen of the United States, the state of New York, and that he is "in the actual military . . . service of the United States." The affidavit is printed on the front of an envelope. Small tear at the upper edge near the corner with mounting remnant (one additional mounting remnant on the verso). Unevenly toned.The accompanying Soldier's Power of Attorney, 8" x 12.5", signed by Hunt and witnessed by Reuben C. Miles, gives authority to Henry Hunt "to cast for me and in my name and stead . . . my vote . . . as if I was personally present at the General election to be held on the 8th day of November 1864." Separation at the edges of some of the folds with minor ink smudging.
