Description

Elvis Presley TV Guide cover photograph inscribed and signed to Ed Sullivan. (1956) Vintage oversize Eastman dye-transfer color 11 x 14 in. (279 x 356 mm.) photograph. A head & shoulders portrait of a young Elvis singing into a studio microphone. This shot was featured on the cover of the 8 September 1956 issue of TV Guide, promoting Elvis' legendary 9 September appearance on the The Ed Sullivan Show. It was on this night that the King was born, with Elvis reaching an audience of millions as 82% of TV viewers tuned in. Though the cameramen were strictly instructed to shoot Elvis from the waist up, glimpses of Presley's pelvic gyrations scandalized older viewers while electrifying the youth. This appearance also marked the public debut of the classic ballad "Love Me Tender," which shot to #1 on the Billboard charts. The photo is presented in a 16 x 20 in. (406 x 508 mm.) board mat, with "TV Guide Cover Portrait" on the mount below the opening. Inscribed and signed in blue ink on the mat at lower right, "To Mr. Ed Sullivan - My sincere thanks to a great guy. Thanks Elvis Presley". Photo in fine condition. Mat exhibits corner wear, cracking and loss, as well as a wrinkle near the signature. Good condition. Accompanied by a LOA from PSA/DNA.
