Description

Bülow, Hans von. Autograph musical quotation inscribed and signed, in English, 1 page (4.5 x 7 in.; 114 x 178 mm.), New York, 26 April 1889; mounting remnants on verso. Four bars of original, unpublished music inspired by Lillian Russell. Under the four bars of music Bülow writes, Sketch of a Day: Nocturne inspired by the bewitching eyes of Miss Lillian Russell, New York, 26 April 1889. An American actress and singer, Lillian Russell became one of the most famous actresses and singers of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, known for her beauty and style, as well as for her voice and stage presence. In 1887, she starred as Carlotta in Gasparone by Karl Millöcker in New York City at the Standard Theatre, together with Eugene Oudin and J. H. Ryley. Later the same year, she was back at the Casino Theatre and over the next several years, she continued to star in operettas and musical theatre in Broadway theatres. At the time von Bülow wrote the present musical quotation, Russell appeared in the title role in The Grand Duchess of Gérolstein, and the composer saw her perform. According to Rudolph Aronson in his Theatrical and Musical Memoirs, "Dr. Hans von Bulow, the famous pianist and conductor, visited the Casino with Mr. Walter Damrosch. 'The Grand Duchess' was on the boards with Lillian Russell in the title rôle. Dr. von Bulow said to me at the time that he had never witnessed a more artistic and elaborate presentation of the Offenbach burletta (as he termed it) anywhere in Europe."
