Description

Tombstone, Arizona: Program for the Inaugural Helldorado Celebration. "Official Program," an 8.5" x 9 7/8 paper-bound booklet consisting of 20 pages, for the first Helldorado celebration held in Tombstone from October 24 through 27, 1929. The book, entitled Official Program/Helldorado/A true to life reproduction of Tombstone's Rip Roaring Days, was priced at 25 cents and includes articles on the town's history, many advertisements, and full schedule of events. In 1929, the Cochise County government moved from Tombstone to Bisbee, Arizona, dealing another setback to a town in the midst of a dramatic decline from its heyday.

Recognizing the attraction of and interest in Tombstone's history, leading residents of the town decided to hold an event to celebrate the town's fiftieth anniversary as well as its colorful past. Named after William Breakenridge's book entitled Helldorado, the event was very successful and continues to be held every October, with reenactments of gunfights, fashion shows, musical entertainment, and a parade. The program is in fine condition and offers a fascinating glimpse into the early efforts of Tombstone to revive its fortunes by highlighting its history and promoting tourism.
