Description
[Samuel Clemens] Mark Twain: Twain-Cable Readings Program. A 3 7/8" x 8 1/2" printed program for the "'Mark Twain' - Cable Readings" at Blackstone Hall, Providence, Rhode Island, dated November 8, 1884. The program advertises both afternoon and evening readings featuring works by Mark Twain and George W. Cable, including advance sheets from The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Mounted to a larger sheet to an overall size of 9 1/2" x 7 3/4".Twain and Cable undertook their joint East Coast lecture tour during 1884-1885, shortly before the publication of Huckleberry Finn. The tour proved highly successful, drawing large audiences and significant press attention, with contemporary newspapers frequently remarking on the contrast between Cable's earnest literary tone and Twain's irreverent humor. In addition to increasing the celebrity of both authors, the tour helped generate anticipation for Huckleberry Finn, which would soon emerge as one of the most influential works in American literature.
The program is affixed to a scrapbook page with three other items, including a "Back-Log Club" program from April 6, 1883; an 1882 "Fish and Game Laws of Massachusetts" booklet; and an 1886 donation request slip for a high school "class-tea."
Condition: Program lightly toned and creased at center fold; separations at edges of fold, not affecting text; crease at top right corner. Toning and loss to edges of scrapbook paper. Donation slip with some soiling and creasing.
