Huey Newton For U.S. Congress Poster.
17.5" x 23"
No place; [1968]

A political poster featuring a black and white image of Newton, urging people to vote on November 5th to "Defend the Black Community and The People's Human Rights". Below this is smaller text that reads, "Huey Newton's name will be on the Nov 5th Ballot as Candidate for the 7th C.D. ALL POWER TO ALL THE PEOPLE BLACK POWER TO BLACK PEOPLE".

Huey P. Newton (1942-1989) was a co-founder of the Black Panther Party (BPP) in 1966. Newton had been greatly influenced by Malcolm X, and the BPP was strongly involved in the Black Power movement throughout the 60s and 70s. Newton ran for Congress in 1968 on the Peace and Freedom Party ticket, which was founded in 1967 in response to opposition to the Vietnam War. Although the party gained reasonable support in California, Newton was unsuccessful in his political bid. In 1982, Newton was accused of embezzling $600,000 of state aid and funneling it into the Oakland Community School that had been founded by the Black Panthers. As a result, Newton disbanded the BPP. On August 22, 1989, Newton was murdered over in a drug dispute.
