Henry Winston Election Poster.15" x 21.75" (38.1 x 55.25cm)
No place; circa 1970
A large black and white image of Winston next to the quote, "They robbed me of my Sight but not my Vision." At the lower margin is a black color block with white text that reads, "Henry Winston/National Chairman of the COMMUNIST PARTY, U.S.A."
Henry Winston (1911-1986) was a Marxist civil rights activist and early member of the American Communist Party. He was elected to the party's National Board in 1936. In 1948, Winston and others were brought to trial during the Foley Square Trial and accused of violating the Smith Act (encouraging an overthrow of the United States government). While these charges could not be proven, Winston was still convicted of revolutionary insurrection. He escaped from custody while out on bail and was sheltered by sympathizers. He was later caught and imprisoned at Terre Haute in Indiana. While in prison, Winston's health severely deteriorated. By 1958, he was experiencing headaches and dizziness, but he was not provided treatment until two years later. In 1960, he was finally transferred to a hospital and had a tumor removed, but the damage was done and he was left permanently blind. In 1961, after facing a great deal of public criticism, the Kennedy administration granted Winston clemency. Although blind, Henry Winston would go on to be elected Chairman of the Communist Party in 1966, a position he held until his death in 1986.
Condition: The top right corner is lightly toned and creased, with a few tears. Else, good.
