Description
Early Nineteenth-Century State of New York Broadside Bills (3). Three printed New York broadside bills introduced in the state legislature, each measuring 8 1/4 x 13 inches. The set includes one early appeal for state funding of free schools and two documents relating to Revolutionary War veterans' petitions for bounty lands. Includes:No. 22: Memorial of the Free School Society, in the city of New-York, praying for assistance from the legislature. Dated January 17, 1822. In part: "The memorial of the Free School Society of New-York, RESPECTFULLY SHEWETH: that by liberal individual contributions...your memorialists have erected....four large commodious buildings, for the instruction of poor children...your memorialists feel peculiarly anxious to save from ignorance, vice and infamy, so large a portion of this rising generation, and are therefore desirous of erecting two or more school houses...to effect this object, the society is under the necessity of applying to the legislature for such assistance as is indispensably requisite for the accomplishment of the desirable end view."
No. 36: Report From the Committee of claims, on the petition of sundry persons praying for bounty lands. Dated January 23, 1827. No. 37: An Act for the final settlement of all claims for bounty lands. Dated January 23, 1827. In part: "...it shall be the duty of the commissioners of the land-office to examine and decide upon all claims which may be presented to them by petition, or otherwise, for bounty lands...and no statute of limitation shall be considered as a bar to any claim...that in case any claim shall be supported by satisfactory evidence, it shall be the duty of the commissioners of the land-office to cause letters patent to be issued in favor of such claimant...the decision of the commissioners of the land-office shall be final and conclusive in relation to all claims which may come before them by virtue of this act...the secretary of state shall cause this act to be published in one of the newspapers...there shall be paid to the commissioners of the land-office such reasonable compensation as in the opinion of the comptroller may be proper, and he is hereby required to audit the accounts."
