Description

Civil War Draft Broadside. One printed page, 11.25", 16.75" (sight), Hingham [Massachusetts], February 13, 1864. Called by Secretary Israel Whitcomb, the broadside calls for a meeting to discuss the recent call for more troops by President Lincoln. These types of meetings were common during the war. The broadside reads, in part: "War Meeting! An Adjourned Meeting of Citizens liable to be Drafted into the Military Service of the United States, (and all persons interested in filling the quota of the Town of Hingham under the call of the President of Feb. 1st, 1864, for 200,000 more men,) will be held . . . To take measures to raise 34 recruits for three years or to serve during the war." Ink ghosting from folding. Overall toning with scattered spots of foxing. Matted and framed to an overall size of 18.75" x 24.25".
