Description

Anti-Slavery Broadside Advocating Northern Secession. 10.5" x 16.25". Salem, Ohio: Homestead Print, [circa 1855]. Broadside titled "Union with Freemen - No Union with Slaveholders," announcing anti-slavery meetings at an unspecified location with agents of the Western Anti-Slavery Society. It concludes with "Emancipation or Dissolution, and a Free Northern Republic!" Many abolitionists saw the futility of working with slaveholders and addressed calls for Southern secession with a counter-call for Northern secession. The masthead of William Lloyd Garrison's newspaper, The Liberator, contained the slogan "No Union with Slaveholders." They saw any agreement with the South as untenable.

Condition: Dampstain along the bottom right edge with uneven bottom edge and minor edgewear. Some offsetting. Upper left corner creased. Minute foxing.
