[William Bryan]. Republic of Texas Land Scrip Unengrossed Form. Printed on both sides of a single sheet, 9.75" x 15.75". [Columbia]: Telegraph Print, 1836. At top: "Republic of Texas." "Land Scrip." "No.__". "640 Acres of Land." And reading: "That I, Sam Houston, President of the Republic of Texas, by virtue of authority vested in me by an act of the general Congress of the Republic, entitled an act for the relief of William Bryan, bearing date the sixth day of December, eighteen hundred and thirty-six, which act authorizes and requires me, to issue to said Bryan, Land Scrip to an amount sufficient to liquidate the debts contracted by him as the agent of Texas." With typographical ornamental border; the identical form is printed upside down (likely a test printing) on the verso. The invoicing for the printing appears in an unknown hand, likely by the printer:Land scrip for William Bryan

The Texas Revolution was primarily funded with credit and loans. Bryan was appointed general agent for Texas in New Orleans on January 14, 1836; and his efforts successfully procured goods and services to Texas, always on credit. The Republic was unable to pay with cash funds, and by July 1836, were greatly indebted to Bryan's firm. The broadside offered here is an unengrossed example of the land scrip used to pay Bryan. The holographic notations indicating quantities suggests that it may be the very order form for the printing of the scrip.
Condition: Uneven toning with deep folds, and slight chipping at intersecting folds and margins. Small tears. Broadside remains attractive.
