Description
"Overland Mail Company": A Delightful and Very Rare Large, Lithographed Advertising Broadside, Circa Early 1870s. "Bradley Barlow & J. L. Sanderson, Proprietors". Depicted is a terrific image of an Overland Mail Stagecoach, carrying identified passengers including Kit Carson, S. B. Maxwell (New Mexico land grant), and Colonel Bent (Bent's Fort). The pig-tailed Chinese men are riding on the back of the stage (presumably the equivalent in those days of back-of-the-bus seating), and a group of prospectors are seen on foot hiking to gold country. The setting is "View of Uncompahgre Mountain 14,440 ft. above sea level on Overland Stage Route." Barlow and Sanderson's stage line was a Colorado-based enterprise. As the broadside notes, "This is the only STAGE LINE running to all points in New Mexico and the San Juan Mining District in Southern Colorado, in connection with the DENVER & RIO GRANDE, DENVER, SOUTH PARK & PACIFIC, KANSAS PACIFIC, AND ATCHISON, TOPEKA & SANTA FE RAILWAYS", and it ran all the way to Redding, California, and Roseburg and Portland, Oregon. Size is an impressive 24" x 20". The broadside has had minor conservation work (full treatment report may be viewed on our website), and presently, with the exception of one trivial small stain near the bottom, displays in near-mint condition.This is an exceedingly rare broadside. Our research has uncovered only a single example ever appearing at auction, sold for $18,000 in a 2013 San Francisco auction.
