Description
Albert Einstein ALS - April 10, 1936 Autograph letter signed ("Papa"), 2 pages (8.5 x 11 in.; 216 x 279 mm.), front and back, in German, [Princeton, New Jersey], 10 April 1936, written to his son Eduard (nicknamed "Tetel" for petit). Usual folds with minor soiling on verso. Einstein gives his son an update on his work at Princeton and comments on Sigmund Freud's theories. "I work with the same young man on problems that are so difficult that it makes you question your own courage...Science devours one entirely, especially when the elasticity of youth is gone..." Einstein writes in part: ...I like it here quite a bit because you can live on your own and do your own thing. People can only bug you by mail. Otherwise, I work with the same young man on problems that are so difficult that it makes you question your own courage...People really only respect England around here. If you tell them that you're from Switzerland, they think it's strange because they think we only have cheese and chocolate...Science devours one entirely, especially when the elasticity of youth is gone. In the end your own brain leads you around by the nose... Einstein then comments on Freud: ...Freud's going to be 80 soon. After all, I think he was right with his main theories and that's something you knew long before me...The reason I didn't understand it sooner is that I had shut my private life completely out so that I didn't have any living material to research...Love, Papa. At fifty-seven, Einstein writes his schizophrenic son, Eduard, about his life and work at Princeton. Einstein then comments on Sigmund Freud. The elder Einstein never seemed very interested in psychoanalysis, or impressed by its precepts, but Eduard was, which might explain his generosity in admitting here that Freud's "main theories are correct" and that Eduard saw this much sooner than Einstein himself.Auction Info
