Description

4/18/23 - THE FIRST YANKEE STADIUM PROGRAM. The early Yankees were actually little more than a featureless and transcient franchise. Salvaged from the ashes of the old Baltimore Orioles, they moved to New York and reorganized as the Highlanders in 1903. For ten years, home was Hilltop Park and thereafter, they shared the Polo Grounds with McGraw’s Giants. It was during this latter tenure that the Yankees engineered two momentous acquisitions -- Ruth and Huggins -- and now, the only element missing was a home they could call their own. Thus was the backdrop for the creation of Yankee Stadium. It was completed before the start of the 1923 season, and grandly stood as the model for all baseball. Amid pomp and ceremony, Yankee Stadium opened its doors on April 18, 1923 hosting, as if so destined, the Boston Red Sox. One of its patrons that day stored away for posterity a program from that milestone event. And here presented is that program. This one is unscored and remains in fully Excellent condition. Mild faulting appears on the cover’s edge along with a minor chip from the upper right corner. The spine and pages are firm with only light oxidation evident on the staples. Rare in the first instance, one of higher quality will likely never be available. (# This item may require additional shipping charges).
