Description

1919 NEW YORK YANKEES PLAYER CONTRACT. As they approached the 1919 regular season, the Yankees were still ‘a team in transition,’ as they say. Col. Ruppert had a little money, but the Yankees still couldn’t seem to turn the corner. In that atmosphere of frustration, there was a willingness to take a chance on a broad assortment of potential talent. Enter a 28 year old refugee from the failed Federal League - a pitcher named Dave Black. A deal was struck, as proven by this standard American League contract, and Black became the property of the Yankees on March 20, 1919. The document remains in Excellent condition, and when properly folded, measures 3 1/2" x 8 1/2". And as we should anticipate, it is duly signed by Jacob Ruppert ("10") in broad fountain pen, and by American League President, Ban Johnson ("10"), also in fountain pen. And we mustn’t overlook the principal, David Black, who signed as well. Dave’s career withered to obscurity, making but one appearance in 1923 with the Red Sox. LOA Spence and Grad/ DNA.
