Description

1856 Aetna Life Insurance "Slave Policy." Two partially printed pages, 8" x 13.75", Lexington, Kentucky; January 24, 1856. Aetna Life Insurance Company Policy No. 91 issued to one J. D. Champlin of Fayette County, Kentucky. It insures the enslaved Henry, a 35-year-old drayman, for $500 for the term of one year. The premium for this coverage was $16.25 per annum. Enslavers often took out insurance on their "property," an enslaved person. Yet almost no slave policies survive. This is a rare example, even rarer in that the insurer remains a household name and dominant player in the insurance industry today. This item previously sold for $3,800 in 2011. Docketing panel on verso.

Condition: Dampstaining throughout with some light wrinkling. 4" closed tear to page with docketing with tear crossing only one word. Open tear to one corner that does not affect any text. Smoothed folds.
