Description

1776 Revolutionary War Receipt for Saltpetre. One page, 6.5" x 6.75", Windham; June 10, 1776. A receipt for "a quantity of Salt Petre offered for Inspection by Mr Joseph Babcock of Windham the maker therefore amounting to Eighteen pounds and thirteen ounces...received for the use of this colony." On verso is docketing that reads, "recd in full the Purchase & Premium - by adv on Treasurer - for £6:10:11" with a signature by Joseph Babcock. Saltpetre, or Potassium nitrate, was used in the production of gunpowder. Before the war, the colonies relied on imports from Britain and Europe for their supply of saltpeter. However, once the war began and supplies of saltpeter (and thus gunpowder) started dwindling, powder mills in the colonies had to start manufacturing it themselves or risk losing the war.

Condition: Light toning and flattened folds. There is a small area of paper loss at the lower left edge, which affects only a small area of text. Overall very good.
