[Republic of Texas]. City of Sabine $1000 Stock Certificate. 7 x 3 1/2 inches, Sabine City, Texas; January 1839. A stock certificate, "No 172," entitling the holder to "the Five Hundreth [sic] Part of the City of Sabine; the original Proprietors being Sam Houston, Philip A. Sublette...and others; and by present the same to the Agent of the Company, shall draw a proportionable dividend of the proceeds of Sales." Signed by Niles F. Smith as "Agent for Proprietors."Sabine City was founded in 1836 by Sam Houston and Philip A. Sublett. The town name was changed to Sabine Pass in 1839. Although technically a stock certificate redeemable for land in the city, it was also used as a local currency as well.
Condition: Age-toned with some edgewear, including a touch of loss at the bottom right corner, affecting text. Endorsed on the verso, with ink erosion at the endorsement, resulting in minor loss. Scattered staining, with a single stray red ink mark.
