Description

[Republic of Texas]. $20 Government of Texas Note with Secretarial Signature by Sam Houston. 7 x 3 inches, Houston, Texas; January 1, 1838. A $20 Government of Texas note, "No. 2148," redeemable at ten percent interest per annum with President Sam Houston's secretarial signature and three cut cancellations. Decorated with a depiction of Minerva with a shield and spear at left and Liberty clutching a spear and reclining on cotton bales at upper right. What makes this number special is the fact that at right, Liberty's shield depicts an eagle instead of a star.

These notes were payable twelve months from date of issue and bore 10% interest in the meantime. However, unlike the United States' gold, silver, and copper coins, the paper money of the Republic of Texas represented only a promise of future payment. As it became apparent that the Republic lacked the ability to pay out, the value of the notes plummeted.

Condition: Lightly toned with minor creasing. Three cut cancellations through center, not affecting legibility of text.
