Description

[King James I]. Three Documents from His Reign. The first, one page on vellum (in Latin), 8 1/2 x 6 inches, "Tenth St Edmunds St," [Northampton]; 1607. The second, one page on vellum (in Latin), 13 1/8 x 1 3/8 inches, [England]; May 3, 1622. The third, one page on vellum (in Latin), 17 x 9 1/2 inches, [England]; [circa 1615].

James, the only son of Mary, Queen of Scots, became King of Scotland in 1567 after his mother's abdication. His cousin, Queen Elizabeth I of England, left no heirs and had executed Mary in 1587 for her involvement in a plot against the English crown. Upon Elizabeth's death in 1603, James VI of Scotland succeeded her as James I of England, uniting the two realms under one monarch. The following year, he authorized a new English translation of the Bible, completed as the King James Version in 1611, which remains one of the most influential works in the English language. His reign also marked the beginning of the Stuart dynasty, which ruled until 1714.

Document dated 1607 with cut slits for seal at bottom margin (seal not present); docketed on verso. Document dated 1622 with light foxing, a few minor spots of loss affecting text.
