Description
[Civil War]. Daily Intelligencer Extra Covering the Surrender of Robert E. Lee. One page, 7.5" x 15.5", Lancaster [Pennsylvania], April 10, [1865]. Published as a special addition to the regular paper to cover "THE GREAT EVENT OF THE WAR." Consisting of correspondence between the two generals, dated April 7 to April 9, as well as dispatches from the U. S. War Department.Included in the exchange was Grant's terms of surrender. Dated April 9, Appomattox Court House, Grant writes to Lee, in part: "...I propose to receive the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia, on the following terms to wit: Rolls of all the officers and men to be made in duplicate, one copy to be given to an officer designated by me, the other to be retained by such officer...as you may designate, the officers to give their individual paroles not to take arms against the Government of the United States, until properly exchanged, and each company or regimental commander sign alike parole for the men of their commands. The arms of the artillery and public property are to be packed and stacked, and turned over to the officers appointed by me to receive them. This will not embrace the side arms of the officers, nor their private horses or baggage. This done, each officer and man will be allowed to return to their homes, not to be disturbed by United States authority so long as they observe their parole and the laws in force where they may reside." Lee responds in a letter the same day, in part: "I have received your letter...containing the terms of surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia...they are accepted. I will proceed to designate the proper officers to carry the spitulations [stipulations] into effect."
Near the end appears two dispatches from Edwin M. Stanton, U. S. Secretary of War, congratulating Grant on his victory and ordering "...a salute of two hundred (200) guns be fired at the headquarters of the Army and Navy Departments, and at every Post and Arsenal in the United States, and at the Military Academy at West Point...in commemoration of the surrender of Genera R. E. Lee and the Army of Northern Virginia..." The event was commemorated in the town of Lancaster by the "...general suspension of business throughout the City..."
The sheet has sustained some staining near the left edge; scattered spots of foxing and uneven toning throughout. Small chips found along the edges in places.
