Description

WWII U. S. 48-Star Flag Flown Aboard the USS Salt Lake City (CA-25) From the Dr. Clarence Rungee Collection.

Synthetic or silk, multipiece construction, 3-inch pole sleeve, 68 x 51 ½-inches. Federal Government Quality maker's label sewn to upper hoist end. The fly is artfully marked in black ink by hand: "USS SALT LAKE CITY IWO JIMA / OKINAWA". Additional notes in manuscript are made in the white stripe on the fly "Sank / Jap Furutaka / Sank Fubuki." The Salt Lake City received 11 battle stars for her WWII service and a Navy Unit Commendation for her actions during the Aleutian Campaign. Post-war the heavy cruiser survived two atomic bomb blasts during the tests at Bikini Atoll. She met an undignified end as a target hull and was sunk off the coast of California. The flag is accompanied with an inventory form from Dr. Clarence Rungee's Flag Heritage Foundation.

Condition: Very good.
