Description

World War II: Manzanar Japanese Internment Camp Chief's Badge.
1 5/8" x 2 3/8" gilt brass with red & blue enamel. Similar in design to law enforcement badges issued in California during the 20th century, it reads: "Chief/ Internal Security/ War Relocation/ Authority/ Manzanar". Stamped on verso: "L. A. Stamp &/ Staty. Co." An important and unique artifact from one of the most controversial and humiliating episodes in our history. After Pearl Harbor, there was widespread fear of additional attacks on the homeland. Japanese-Americans, whether native born or aliens who had lived in the U.S. for decades, were viewed as possible saboteurs and fifth-column agents, though without any supporting evidence. Accordingly, President Roosevelt signed Executive Order #9066 in February 1942 to forcibly relocate any residents deemed disloyal and a security risk. On short notice, Japanese-Americans living on the West Coast were rounded up and transported to ten different relocation centers hastily built in remote locations throughout the west. The most famous of these, Manzanar, began operations in March in Independence [Owens Valley], California. Although under army control initially, it operated under the War Relocation Authority, established for this very purpose. At the peak of operation, Manzanar housed 10,046 detainees. Most were not allowed to go home until after the conclusion of the war. Beginning in January 1944, able-bodied men held in these camps were subject to the draft. Many served with great distinction in the 442nd Regiment Combat Team, part of the 100th Infantry Battalion. In 1988, the Federal Government issued a formal apology to the detainees and issued modest reparations. Today, the National Park Service operates Manzanar as a open-air museum.
