Description
USS Wisconsin (BB-68), Known as "The Whiskey".The USS Wisconsin (BB-64) is an Iowa-class battleship, the second ship named for the 30th state and the highest numbered battleship commissioned by the US Navy. The Iowa-class Iowa, New Jersey, Missouri and Wisconsin were the so-called "fast battleships" that emphasized speed without a compromise of either armor or armament, that could keep up with the Essex-class aircraft carriers. The present auction includes flags from all five of these monumental vessels.
The ensign of the USS Wisconsin is a 72" X 120" bunting flag with sewn stars & stripes finished with a roped canvas header with a loop at each end. It is marked on the obverse hoist, "6 X 10" and on the reverse hoist, "WIS (BB-63)."
The Wisconsin was launched on the second anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attack in 1943 and spent her WWII career in the Pacific shelling Japanese positions and protecting U.S. aircraft carriers. She joined the Pacific Theater in time for the invasion of the Philippines and also participated in the actions against the Japanese in Formosa, French Indo-China, China, Okinawa and Iwo Jima. In 1945, she bombarded the Japanese homeland where, by that point in the war, Allied warships such as Wisconsin, were able to shell targets almost at will. She also screened the carriers whose planes put the Nagato out of action. After the surrender, she participated in the occupation of Japan and went on to have a long career that included service in Korea, Vietnam, the Cold War and Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. The USS Wisconsin is currently a museum ship in Norfolk, Virginia. The flag would be fitting for a WWII, battleship or a War in the Pacific collection.
WWII Awards of the USS Wisconsin: American Campaign Medal; Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with five campaign stars; World War II Victory Medal; Navy Occupation Service Medal; Philippine Presidential Unit Citation and Philippine Liberation Medal with two campaign stars.
The flag is in Good condition - used, worn and soiled with minimal wear on the upper and lower fly.
This flag was formerly in the collection of Dr. Clarence Rungee, and is accompanied by his original museum inventory sheet with identifying information.
For those who did not receive a hard copy of the auction catalog, we present here the introductory comments and history of Dr. Rungee and his remarkable collection. If you scroll further, you will also find various contemporary newspaper articles, as well as a selection of the many letters of donation and transmittal which accompanied the collection and a categorization of the collection.
