She Sank Six Submarines in 12 Days.
USS England(DD-635). USS England
(DE-635), a Buckley-class destroyer escort commissioned in December
1943, was named in honor of Ensign John C. England (1920-1941), who
was killed in action aboard the battleship USS Oklahoma
during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.
The England's sinking of six Japanese submarines in twelve
days is a feat unparalleled in the history of antisubmarine
warfare.The ensign of the England is a 66" X 112" cotton bunting, 48-star, double applique, sewn stripe flag finished with a header and wartime grey metal grommets. It was made by the National Flag Company of Cincinnati, OH. It is marked on the upper reverse hoist, "USS England D635" and on the lower hoist "Hercules 6' X 10'."
The England arrived at Espiritu Santo, in the New Hebrides in March of 1944 and took up escort, patrol and screening duty between Espiritu Santo and Guadalcanal.
Between May 19th and May 27, 1944, the England had the benefit of her training, skill, location, technology, accurate naval intelligence, and incredibly good luck to engage and sink the I-16, RO-106, RO-104, RO-106, RO-108, and the RO-105 submarines of the Imperial Japanese Navy.
This feat of anti-submarine warfare performance was never matched in World War II. It won for England a Presidential Unit Citation and the assurance from the Chief of Naval Operations, Admiral E. J. King, "There'll always be an England in the United States Navy."*
For the rest of 1944 and in early 1945, England continued her patrol, convoy escort, and screening duties until she joined the Okinawa Campaign. On May 9, 1945, while on station, England was attacked by three Japanese kamikazes, killing 37, wounding 25, and setting the ship ablaze, thus, ending her active combat career. Emergency repairs got her to a ship yard, but the end of the war halted the repairs and she was decommissioned.

For her WWII service the USS England was awarded: the Navy Presidential Unit Citation, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with 10 campaign stars, and the World War II Victory Medal.
The ensign of the England is in good condition. It is used, worn, soiled, and repaired with several tears on the fly edge and small holes, but otherwise complete.
This flag was formerly in the collection of Dr. Clarence Rungee, and is accompanied by his original museum inventory sheet with identifying information.
