United States Government Escape and Evasion Barter Kit.

3¾" x 4½" x ¾". Sealed black vulcanized rubber case, with "If Found Return To / ComNavAirLant (CNAL 34) / Norfolk, Virginia" molded in raised letters on each side, and the number "507" molded into one side. Escape and evasion kits of this type were typically issued to military pilots to be used for barter in the event they were shot down behind enemy lines. A kit of this type typically contains approximately .90 troy ounces (.75 troy ounces for coins, .15 troy ounces for rings) of fine gold. The Department of Defense Logistics Agency indicates that these kits consist of: one 20 Franc gold coin, one 10 Franc gold coin, one 1 pound Sovereign gold coin (British of South African mintage), two ½ pound Sovereign gold coins (British or South African mintage), and three gold rings either plain or embossed.
