1940 "Fighting Mary" Naval Ensign
Rare 1940 USS Maryland (BB-46) 48-Star
Ship's Flag. Approximately 96 x 57 ½-inches. Stenciled in large
black letters "1940 USS MARYLAND" on one side of the hoist and
"[Indecipherable] / U.S. ENSIGN NO. 7" on the other side. With 48
separately applied stars on each side. Retains the brass mounting
ring and halyard.The USS Maryland was a Colorado-class battleship launched March 20, 1920. In 1940 it was deployed to Pearl Harbor as part of the Pacific fleet's operation in Hawaiian waters. On December 7, 1941 she was moored at Battleship Row alongside the USS Oklahoma. Though her berth mate was sunk during the Japanese attack, she survived despite being damaged by two bombs. The Maryland, once repaired, played many key roles in the battles in the South Pacific. She was present at the invasion of the Gilbert Islands, the bombardment of the Marshall Islands and participated in the Saipan campaign during which she again sustained significant damage. Repaired once more, she went on to fight in the Battle of Leyte during which she was struck by a Japanese kamikaze resulting in an huge explosion in which 31 of her crew died. She was back in action two months later and participated in the invasion of Okinawa where she was struck by a yet another kamikaze with a 500-pound bomb. This resulted in 53 casualties and effectively ended her combat career in WWII.
Condition: Very good. With the expected wear at the fly end and soiled from use. This example may have well been aboard the ship during the Pearl Harbor attack.
