Description
Large Archive of Amphibious Task Force 78 Radio Logs, Daily Logs, Orders, Letters, and Restricted Documents Related to the Invasion of Leyte Island, October-December, 1944.A fantastic archive which will require hours of research to properly evaluate its historical significance to the invasion of Leyte. The letters bear the return address of Lieutenant Ted Nordyke, USNR so all the material in the lot is presumed to have belonged to him as commander of Naval Beach Party No. 8. The lot includes ten 5 ¼-inch by 8-inch hardcover notebooks with handwritten entries commencing October 9, 1944, about a week before the actual landings. The first notebook has the handwritten caption "Log of Joint Operations / U.S.N. B.P. #3 & #8 / Central Phillippine [sic] / Invasion / Complete Muster List / of Officers & Men Participating / at Rear of Book". The first entry of note is dated October 20, 1944 and reads: "0620 one "Betty" bomber came over dropped stick of 100# bombs". The first notebook ends in mid-November and chronicles the experiences during the early part of the invasion. Air attacks and casualties are noted as are LST movements, etc. There are several incoming and outgoing radio and signals logs. The last entries are in mid-February of 1945. Additionally there are nine message books titled "Message Book M-105-A / Signal Corps, U.S. Army" with handwritten incoming and outgoing undated messages on preprinted carbon paper pages. There are 32 letters with postmarks dated June 25, 1944 through July 30, 1944 from Lt. Nordyke to his wife in Brookline, Massachusetts. These letters have not been reviewed for content. There is a map titled "Far Shore Diagram" with points of interest including water points, prisoner of war areas, fuel depots, etc. The lot includes attack orders for Amphibious Task Force 78 dated October 7, 1944 and marked "TOP SECRET". Lastly there is an official packet marked Restricted and titled Allied Geographical Section / Southwest Pacific Area / Terrain Study No. 84 / LEYTE PROVINCE / (Philippine Series) / 17 August 1944 and a photographic supplement marked 84B, dated September 26, 1944. There is also a large rectangular piece of aluminium present, the purpose or significance of which is unknown. The archive can potentially reveal some interesting new details about the invasion and will provide hours of research.
Condition: Very good.
