Fantastic Painted A-2 Leather Flight Jacket "Flying Dutchman" Identified to Lt. David Greiss, Navigator, 7th Bomb Squadron, 34th Bombardment Group. A beautiful size 42 A-2 jacket made by Perry Sportswear, Inc. Newburgh, New York. Sewn to the upper left breast is a 4.75" in diameter machine-embroidered cotton 7th Bomb Squadron patch. The back of the jacket features a B-24 and B-17 bomber painted white with red tim and yellow engine cowls. "Flying Dutchman" is painted in red script with yellow borders. Thirty-five blue bombs on a yellow field, one for each of his 35 missions, are painted below the art work. Lieutenant's bars are painted in white on each leather shoulder strap. Near the tag on the brown cotton lining is written in ink: "David H. Greiss / 0-709354". The jacket is in excellent condition, retaining all working zippers and snaps and with a minor tear in the jersey cuffs and waistband. Also included in this superb lot are Lt. Greiss's 3.25" pinback Navigator's wings, marked "Sterling" in raised letters; a matched pair of winged-prop collar devices; two "U.S." collar insignia and a pair of Lieutenant's bars. Rounding out the lot is an navigational map of Hooghly River, India and a cased Japanese Order of the Sacred Treasure. The group comes with a notarized letter from Greiss's brother as well as photocopies of photographs of the Flying Dutchman's crew, including Lt. Greiss.
