Description

D-Day: Top Secret Naval Bombardment Map "AMERICAN NEPTUNE AREA BATTERY BOMBARDMENT PLAN", Circa Late May, 1944. 15 ¼ X 12 ¾-inches. Scale 1:250,000. Marked "Folio N" on the verso. The map identifies German gun emplacements and the naval bombardment plan for destroying them on the French coast from Cherbourg on the east to Courseulles sur mer on the west, the area comprising the American landing points of Utah and Omaha beaches. Many key German emplacements that have become iconic names in D-Day history are pinpointed on this rare map: Pointe du Hoc, Sainte-M?re-Église, and Maisy Battery. Most emplacements have been given a target number and a pre- and post-landing schedule of bombardment. A printed note on the verso illustrates just how fluid the situation was in the immediate run up to the landings: "IMPORTANT NOTE: GUNS IN BATTERY 8A REPORTED MOVED AR0UND 12 MAY, NEW LOCATION UNKNOWN". This map is also labeled in bold red ink "TOP SECRET BIGOT". The term "BIGOT" was used to designate the highest level of military secrecy and the list of personnel cleared to know details of Overlord was known as the BIGOT list, and the people on it were known as "Bigots". Extant D-Day bombardment maps, few as they may be, likely reside in institutions and rarely do examples make it to the collector market. This map is a choice example and would be a centerpiece in any serious D-Day collection.

Condition: Excellent. With old, smoothed fold creases and three small binding holes along the left margin.
