Description

D-Day: Rare Operation Bigot Top Secret Invasion Maps for Omaha Beach East and West, with Sunlight and Moonlight Tables on the Verso, Commander, Task Force 122, April 21, 1944.

Two multicolored printed maps on stiff paper, each 22 x 17 inches (56 x 43 cm), both stamped TOP SECRET - BIGOT in green ink, and numbered respectively 1875 (Omaha Beach - West, Vierville-sur-Mer) and 1868 (Omaha Beach - East, Colleville-sur-Mer). Versos printed with Sunlight and Moonlight Tables, May 25 to June 21, 1944. The consignor indicates that these maps were from the estate of Harold W. Hurd, who was a Lieutenant Commander in the Navy during WWII. Additional research may ultimately determine Lt. Commander Hurd's military service record and provide his association with D-Day operations.

Among the most closely guarded secrets of World War II, Operation Bigot designated those cleared to know the precise details of the Normandy invasion-an intelligence level above even Top Secret. These rare charts, prepared under the authority of Commander, Task Force 122 in the weeks before D-Day, delineate the exact landing zones at Omaha Beach, East and West. Compiled from aerial reconnaissance and Resistance intelligence, they record every contour, tidal gradient, and German defense. On the reverse, sunlight and moonlight tables guided the critical timing of the assault, ensuring the invasion struck under ideal conditions of tide, darkness, and surprise. Issued only to the most trusted planners and field commanders, such maps were to be guarded-or destroyed-at all costs.

Exceptionally preserved examples of the invasion's most sensitive planning documents, these Bigot-classified charts represent the highest echelon of Allied secrecy. Their survival stands as a remarkable testament to the meticulous planning and extraordinary security measures that defined Operation Overlord and the Allied liberation of Europe. We have sold similar Operation Bigot maps for the Utah beach landing, but this is only the second time we've offered the more sought-after Omaha beach version.

Condition: Both examples have been stored folded in quadrants; the verso of each example exhibits some uniform toning, otherwise both are in excellent condition.
