Description

D-Day Invasion: Flag from General Omar Bradley's Command Ship USS Achernar.

56" x 30" sailcloth and wool 48-star flag, stamped on the hoist "U.S. No. 11 MI 44". Forty-eight printed stars in a standard row pattern. Two metal grommets. Excellent condition. The Achernar [AKA-53] was a Andromeda-Class attack cargo ship used by General Omar Bradley, Commander of the U. S. 1st Army. She was commissioned on January 31, 1944. On June 6, 1944, the Achernar was anchored in the Baie de Seine, outside Omaha Beach. She served as a nerve and supply center for U. S. troops engaged in the D-Day invasion. On June 11th, Bradley and personnel disembarked to set up their land-based headquarters, the Achernar returning to England for further assignments.

The flag was obtained at the time by the consignor's father, Lester Fred Bevil, a career navy man who enlisted out of high school in 1932, continuing to serve until 1956, attaining the rank of Commander. He was stationed at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, as a chief pay clerk at Kaneohe Airfield. He was a Supply Officer on the Achernar during its involvement on D-Day. His older brother, Glen James Bevil, was killed in action in 1942 while serving aboard the USS Monsoon in the South Pacific. His younger brother served on the USS New Orleans in the South Pacific during WWII. Bevil was born in McAllen, Texas.

The lot includes research material about the USS Achernar and service records for "Les" Bevil.
