Description
USS General LeRoy Eltinge (AP-154).USS General LeRoy Eltinge (AP-154) was a General G. O. Squier-class transport ship for the US Navy in World War II, named in honor of US Army General LeRoy Eltinge, a decorated West Point graduate who served in the Philippines and WWI.
The ensign of the Eltinge is a 48-star 56" X 72" bunting flag with sewn stars & stripes, finished with a ring with lead-line and butterfly brass swivel snap. The obverse hoist of the ensign is unmarked.
The transport Eltinge was commissioned into service on 21 February 1945 and in March departed to deliver troops to India, Australia, Guam and Hawaii. In June of 1945 she was transferred to the Atlantic to bring GIs home in Operation Magic carpet, the post-World War II operation to repatriate the over eight million American military personnel from abroad. After the war she served in Korea and Vietnam.
Awards: China Service Medal; American Campaign Medal; Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal; World War II Victory Medal and Navy Occupation Service Medal with Asia or Europe clasps.
Condition: Good, the flag is used, and worn with some minor losses. The upper fly corner is frayed and end has been repaired.
This flag was formerly in the collection of Dr. Clarence Rungee, and is accompanied by his original museum inventory sheet with identifying information.
